UNEARTH Track Added to Guitar Hero World Tour

Posted by Michael Mueller on April 29, 2009 at 7:08 PM

UnearthWhile it's true that the Guitar Hero video game has sparked enormous interest in learning how to play real guitars, one of its more under-the-radar benefits has been giving deserving bands (particularly their guitarists) a mass audience they might not get via mainstream radio and press outlets.

Case in point: Starting May 7, "Grave of Opportunity" from Massachusetts metallers Unearth will be available as a downloadable track on the Guitar Hero World Tour. The song is from the band's latest album, the critically acclaimed The March, which hit streets last October. The song is part of the Ferret Music/Metal Blade Track Pack, which also contains The Devil Wears Prada's "Dez Moines," and Chimaira's "On Broken Glass."

"We're jazzed that 'Grave of Opportunity' will be available for download for Guitar Hero World Tour," says Unearth lead guitarist Buz McGrath. "It's a kick-ass tune that is wicked fun to play, so start practicing your super awesome Guitar Hero moves and get ready to feel the burn.

Currently, Unearth is gearing up for their upcoming North American tour with Testament and labelmates Lazarus A.D.

SEYMOUR DUNCAN Introduces the SFX-11 Twin Tube Blue

Posted by Michael Mueller on April 29, 2009 at 9:40 AM

Seymour Duncan has announced their newest stompbox, the SFX-11 Twin Tube Blue, designed for blues guitarists. Like its cousins the Twin Tube Classic and Twin Tube Mayhem, the Twin Tube Blue is a high-quality, two-channel guitar preamp; however, this one is voiced for blues tones ranging from Chicago and Texas blues to modern and classic sounds.

Seymour Duncan SFX-11Unlike its Twin Tube brethren, the SFX-11 features a duet of premium, subminiature, USA-made Phillips-Sylvania 6111 dual triode tubes, which are voiced similar to a familiar 12AU7. They were designed and manufactured to meet the U.S. Government's MIL-E-1 spec for reliability under conditions of severe shock, vibration, and temperature, and they exhibit virtually no tendency toward microphonics.

Inexpensive tube gear often runs in "starved plate mode," in which the tubes function like clipping diodes and do not actually amplify. The Twin Tube Blue's high-plate voltage and 100 percent vacuum-tube signal path allows the tubes to operate at their full potential and provide maximum dynamic range, which results in more gain and the smooth, bluesy tone you expect from a high-quality tube preamp.

The SFX-11's Rhythm channel offers up sparkly chords and bright and punchy leads. The Lead channel starts with familiar Texas blues and goes all the way to heavy blues tones. The Twin Tube Blue is true-bypass and features a heavy-duty chassis and a fully encapsulated toroidal transformer for quiet operation. A 16-volt AC transformer is also included. MSRP is $325.

Reinhardt Amplification Releases the Willard Distortion Pedal

Posted by Michael Mueller on April 28, 2009 at 9:52 AM

Willard pedalReinhardt Amplification has released the Willard distortion pedal, which is based on a 1981 big box Rat pedal. "I originally started playing in the early to mid '80s, and this was my favorite old pedal," says owner Bob Reinhardt. "I wanted to try to recreate the old tones from that time, and this is what we came up with."

These pedals feature true-bypass and are hand-assembled with top-of-the-line components for reduced noise and better sound quality.  One thing about the original circuit that Reinhardt says he would never change is the rare NOS LM308N chip. "That op-amp is such a key to the thick, natural tone of this circuit," he says. "Modern substitutes just don't measure-up."

The Willard lists for $199.95. You can check it out at www.reinhardtamps.com.

Original CREED Line-Up Reunites for Summer Tour and New Album

Posted by Michael Mueller on April 27, 2009 at 10:11 AM

One of the most successful rock bands of the past decade, Creed has announced all four of the original band members are back together for a summer tour and new album. On reuniting, guitarist Mark Tremonti stated, "We're all very excited to reconnect with our fans and each other after six long years."

"Our career as Creed came to a very abrupt and unforeseen ending," adds drummer Scott Phillips. "After reflecting on some of the greatest personal and professional moments of our lives, we've come to realize that we are still very capable of continuing that career and our friendship on a grander scale than ever before."

"This is a development we are all happy about," continues bassist Brian Marshall. "It has been a long time since the four of us have taken the stage together, and without hesitation or reservation this is something all of us are in to. The anticipation to get back out there is electrifying."

"It's amazing how life can change and bring you full circle," says singer Scott Stapp. "Time gave us all a chance to reflect, grow and gain a deeper appreciation of our friendships, artistic chemistry, passion for music, and sincere love for our fans. It's rare in life to get a second chance to make a first impression and we embrace the opportunity. We all believe the best is yet to come."

After Creed's less-than-amicable breakup in 2004, guitarist Mark Tremonti and drummer Scott Phillips recruited bassist Brian Marshall, who'd been dismissed from Creed during the band's Human Clay Tour, and former Mayfield Four singer Myles Kennedy to form Alter Bridge, which has released two albums: One Day Remains and Blackbird. Singer Scott Stapp released a solo album titled The Great Divide.

According to Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy, the Creed reunion doesn't spell the end of Alter Bridge. In fact, band is currently writing new songs and will hit the studio this November to record "Alter Bridge III." The band will also release a live DVD titled "Alter Bridge Live in Amsterdam" later this year. See the clip below.

Creed has also teamed with I Love All Access to provide a variety of VIP ticket packages for the tour, including premium seats, meet and greets, photo ops, parties and more.

Gibson Custom Shop Announces Inspired By Robby Krieger SG

Posted by Michael Mueller on April 27, 2009 at 9:25 AM

There are only a few guitar players so recognized by their guitar of choice that it’s hard to picture one without the other. But such is the case with renowned American rock 'n' roll guitarist Robby Krieger and the Gibson SG. Whether it's the SG Special he played at the beginning of his career with the legendary Doors, or the dozen or so he's owned since, Gibson SGs have defined Krieger's career the way he and the Doors redefined American rock and roll. As the founder, songwriter, and lead guitarist of the Doors, Krieger has played on and written such classic rock staples as "Light My Fire," "Love Me Two Times," "Love Her Madly," and countless others that are as relevant today as they were popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In recognition of Robby Krieger's status as a genuine American rock 'n' roll icon, the Gibson Custom Shop has honored his legacy with the introduction of the new Inspired By Robby Krieger SG. Blending several features from some of Krieger's favorite SGs, the Krieger Inspired By model recreates the body of his beloved 1967 SG Standard, right down to the tiniest scratches, dings and belt rash. It is made of traditional solid mahogany and finished in Aged Dark Heritage Cherry finish. The neck is also an SG one-piece mahogany neck, but with a hybrid neck profile modeled after the neck on a '61 SG Standard owned by a close friend and the neck on his personal '67 SG Standard. Krieger's signature sound is delivered through a pair of Gibson's '57 Classic pickups. Robby Krieger SG

Everything else is classic Gibson SG Standard, including the ABR-1 Bridge and Maestro tailpiece tremolo system, nickel hardware, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with figured acrylic trapezoid inlays, and vintage tulip tuners. The new Inspired By Robby Krieger SG Standard will be produced in a very limited run of only 150 guitars—50 signed and aged to look exactly like Krieger's original, and 100 with Gibson Custom's V.O.S. finish treatment. Each guitar will come with a Gibson Custom case, custom care kit, and a certificate of authenticity signed personally by Krieger.

MSRP is $8,224. See Gibson.com for more details.
