Jonny Lang guitar tabThis year's Experience Hendrix Tour is soon drawing to a close, and judging by Joe Satriani's comments at Music Radar, it seems to have been a blast. So we decided to check in for ourselves. Sitting in his tour bus outside of the Wellmont Theater today, in Montclair, New Jersey, guitarist Jonny Lang filled us in on what it's been like to play some of the greatest guitar music ever recorded with some of the greatest guitarists on the planet.

Tell us about your experience with the Experience Hendrix tour.
It's been pretty awesome. I get to play with these amazing guitar players every night. It's really like a family thing, because we're together day and night. And there are no egos, which is surprising given all the guitar players who are here! Everyone's just really down to earth.

Who has knocked your socks off the most?
Everybody, really. Eric Johnson is insanely good, just an incredible guitar player. Brad Whitford (Aerosmith), who plays with me on my three-song set each night, has been incredible as well.

Which songs are you playing?
We do "Fire," "The Wind Cries Mary," and "Spanish Castle Magic."

Did you get to choose the songs?
No, they pretty much told me which songs I was gonna do. We've done "Spanish Castle Magic" in my band on and off for years, so I asked about doing that one. No one had it yet, so I got it, and that's been really comfortable for me.

Joe Satriani said in a blog post that you and Brad really lit it up playing "Fire" in Chicago.
Really? He said that? Wow!

In addition to the Experience Hendrix Tour this spring, Lang will be releasing his first-ever live album, Live at the Ryman, on April 20, on Concord Records. You can purchase the album exclusively at his web site, Jonny Lang.com, now. It's Lang's first record since his Grammy-winning 2006 release Turn Around.

About playing the Ryman, home of the Grand Ole Opry, Lang says: "It's one of those magical places where you just can't help but be inspired. I think a lot of that magic and inspiration makes it way onto this recording. It's a collection of some of the best songs from our studio recordings – only more energized, thanks to a great group of musicians and a very receptive live audience."

After a short break following the Experience Hendrix Tour, Lang and his band will be hitting the road for a summer full of shows. Check out his web site, JonnyLang.com, for all the latest info.
