Wander into Robert's Western World—one of the hottest and most enduring honky-tonks on Nashville's historic strip on lower Broadway—on a Thursday or Friday evening, and it's a good bet that the screaming guitar you hear is coming from 18-year old super-picker Daniel Donato, currently the lead guitarist in Nashville institution the Don Kelley Band.
Picking up the guitar for the first time when he was 12 years old, Donato wasted no time in searching for his own unique voice on the instrument. He soon discovered a passion for older music—particularly for country and western.
Donato soon dived into Nashville's exciting and competitive live music scene. Through his studies of players from the past and present, along with hundreds of shows under his belt with the aforementioned Don Kelley Band—whose alumni include Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert, Johnny Hiland, Guthrie Trapp, and J.D. Simo—Donato has become one of the hottest must-see guitarists in Music City.
Be sure to click on the link to his lessons above, to see a two-minute sample of Donato's barn-burning lines in a trio setting. Once you pick your jaw up from the floor, you should know that the concepts Donato teaches in these five lessons, while based in country guitar, also apply to blues, rock, and even jazz players. So even if country isn't your thing, there is a lot of meat to be digested here for players of all styles.
