Learn to Play "Hurt" as Recorded by Johnny Cash

Posted by Michael Mueller on November 18, 2016 at 4:42 PM

In 2002, country legend Johnny Cash released American IV: The Man Comes Around, an album comprising primarily cover songs stripped down to their bare essentials. The most enduring track from that release was Cash's take on Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt," from their 1994 album The Downward Spiral. Aided by what is considered one of the greatest music videos of all time, the song would become Cash's swan song, his last hit before his death, in 2003.

Learn How to Play "Soul Man" by Sam and Dave

Posted by Michael Mueller on November 16, 2016 at 11:10 AM

Written by the great Isaac Hayes, "Soul Man" became the biggest hit and signature song of the great soul/R&B duo Sam & Dave. The famous exclamation "Play it, Steve" heard in the song refers to legendary soul guitarist Steve Cropper of Booker T. & the MG's, which was the session band that recorded the track in 1967.

The song found new life just a dozen years later, when John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd—the Blues Brothers—performed it on "Saturday Night Live" and subsequently in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers.

In our new G-Plus Song lesson, you'll learn how to play this soul masterpiece, from the signature sliding 6ths to Cropper's high-energy verse chord riff and the classic R&B-style turnaround phrase. The lesson includes step-by-step video instruction by Doug Boduch, auto-scrolling guitar tab, and a full-band backing track.
