Revised and Updated THE RECORDING GUITARIST Now Available

Posted by Michael Mueller on August 12, 2010 at 9:58 AM

First published in 1999, well before the explosion and exponential growth of desktop and laptop recording, The Recording Guitarist was a well-written and practical hands-on guide for guitarists working in a variety of recording environments. But the ensuing explosion and exponential growth of desktop and laptop recording basically rendered the tome a dinosaur—until now.

The Recording GuitaristRevised and updated with a heavy focus on the modern digital-recording techniques and processes now so prevalent everywhere from desktop home setups to top recording studios, author Jon Chappell provides an invaluable reference guide that should always be in arm's reach of any guitarist or studio engineer.

Chappell takes readers through every step of the recording process—from selecting the right guitar to amps and speakers, miking techniques, double-tracking, adding effects, tracking vs. mixing, a glossary of important audio and recording terms, and a detailed synopsis on how to dial in the sounds of 14 remarkable guitarists including Dimebag Darrell, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Morse, and Sonny Landreth. Beyond that, advice from recording industry pros such as Carl Verheyen, Al Di Meola, Alex Lifeson, and Phil Ramone explain dozens of studio tips and tricks—digital delay cascade effects, capoing, setting up a guitar for slide, using multieffects processors inline and more—for players and engineers alike to keep in their arsenal. Hundreds of diagrams and pictures throughout leave no question unanswered.

About the Author: Guitarist, arranger, and recording musician Jon Chappell has written numerous books and articles on music and recording technology. Chappell was previously editor in chief of the magazines Guitar and Home Recording.

NEIL YOUNG Gulf Coast Tour To Aid Residents Affected by Oil Spill

Posted by Michael Mueller on August 12, 2010 at 9:39 AM

Neil Young guitar tabBurbank, CA – Music legend Neil Young will perform several shows in the Gulf Coast in September to aid residents affected by the oil spill. Young has teamed up with his friend John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods, Inc., which will donate 100,000 pounds of chicken products to be distributed to the Bay Area Food Bank. Tyson will deliver four truckloads of chicken, the equivalent of almost 400,000 meals, to the Bay Area Food Bank, which serves Central Gulf Coast communities in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi.

Young is also asking concert-goers to bring non-perishable food items, which will be given to the food bank. All proceeds from the sale of unique limited-edition Neil Young t-shirts available only at the concerts will also be donated to the food bank.

The hunger relief effort is the result of the long-standing friendship between Young and Tyson. "Millions of people who live along the Gulf Coast struggle with hunger and the economic impact of the oil spill has only made matters worse," Young says. "I appreciate the willingness of John Tyson and his company to get involved by helping the regional food bank help feed those in need. We both encourage concert-goers to spend money locally and support local business."

Gus G's FIREWIND to Release New Album October 26

Posted by Michael Mueller on August 11, 2010 at 2:07 PM

FirewindThe Greek metal phenomenon Firewind, led by guitar sensation and new Ozzy Osbourne sidekick Gus G., will release their scorching new effort Days of Defiance in the U.S. on October 26th (Oct. 25th throughout Europe). The 13-track effort contains, of course, a healthy dose of Gus G.'s string-melting soloing, but also diplays plenty of old-school-ish power metal riffing mixed with melodic vocal hooks.

"Usually when we write an album we let the music come to us and go with the flow," says guitarist Gus G. "Days of Defiance wasn't much different in the making, but this time we recorded almost all of it in our home studios, which allowed us to be more relaxed.... One of our main goals though was to get a bit more of an 'unpolished' sound and be more raw. I think we achieved it and that gives an extra heaviness to the overall sound."

The album's first single, "World on Fire" (scroll down to see a video clip) kicks off with a borderline thrash power-chord guitar riff, then offers a scaled-back verse before hitting hard with its huge chorus. Dare I say it calls to mind Tooth and Nail-era Dokken. "Embrace the Sun" is an '80s-style rocker with a surprisingly radio-friendly hook and even a short, compact solo that makes it the leading candidate for the second single to go to radio. Other highlights include the Yngwie Malmsteen-esque "Heading for the Dawn"; the acoustic-driven "Broken," another track with an '80s-style monster chorus, radio-friendly solo, and tension-raising whole-step modulation on the outro choruses; the high-energy instrumental "SKG"; and album closer "When All Is Said."

Here is a complete track listing for Days of Defiance:

The Ark of Lies
World on Fire
Embrace the Sun
The Departure
Heading for the Dawn
Cold as Ice
Kill in the Name of Love
Losing Faith
The Yearning
When All Is Said

Watch the band's official MySpace page in the coming weeks to see the new album's cover art.

The "World On Fire" single will be available for purchase on digital platforms starting on 8/17, so be sure to keep an eye out for that as well.

SLAYER Performs on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

Posted by Michael Mueller on August 11, 2010 at 8:35 AM

In what can only be a sign that that apocalypse is near, legendary thrash metallers Slayer performed "Hate Worldwide," the latest single from their new album World Painted Blood, last night (8/10) on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (see video below). Yes, you read that right—Slayer on network television! Granted, "Late Night," as its name says, airs at a time when most Slayer haters would already be visiting their dream lands filled with fuzzy bunnies and cuddly kittens, but still ... network television? All I can say is that if you see them on "Leno" anytime soon, you'd better drop to your knees and start repenting!

Slayer recently made metal history, performing as 1/4 of metal's "Big 4," along with Anthrax, Megadeth, and Metallica. The thrash icons kick off the U.S. portion of their tour with Megadeth tonight (8/11) in Glen Falls, NY. Check out for the latest news and a complete list of tour dates.

AEROSMITH's Joe Perry Says Steven Tyler As Judge on American Idol Is "Done Deal"

Posted by Michael Mueller on August 5, 2010 at 9:14 AM

Aerosmith guitar tabLike sand through the hourglass, so are the days of Aerosmith's lives these days. After various pain pill addictions, a fall from the stage at Sturgis, and his much ballyhooed plan to leave the band for a couple of years to focus on "Brand Tyler," now singer Steven Tyler wants to be a judge on the next season of "American Idol," and the band is none too happy about it.

"We're told it's a done deal," guitarist Joe Perry told the Boston Herald.

And to add insult to injury, Tyler didn't even tell the band personally. "I found out on the Internet like the rest of the world," said Perry. "If Steven is committed to a TV show, that kind of affects the rest of us. We'd like to plan our lives, ya know?"

Tyler gave the first hint of confirmation while on his way to an Aerosmith after-party at Studio 54 in Las Vegas—a bash to which the rest of the band was not even invited—when he told reporters asking about the "Idol" gig, "I'm doing it. What do you think? I'm doing it."

"American Idol" producers have not confirmed the new judges who will replace outgoing Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell, but with Tyler's statements to the press, it appears that he and singer Jennifer Lopez have the inside track to join Randy Jackson at the judges' table next season. An official announcement is expected in September.
