Hudson premiered his voice at a series of intimate North American gigs last fall. The performances were met with much praise and approval from the band's diehard fanbase. Now the vocalist will be able to showcase his pipes to other parts of the country and beyond, where a similar reaction is expected for this talented up 'n comer with undeniable chops.

A Guitar Made Out of Bacon - Why Not?

Posted by Michael Mueller on March 5, 2012 at 6:51 PM

I'm convinced that if there is a heaven, its streets are not paved with gold but rather with hearty, thick-cut bacon! Really, is there anything that can't be made better with bacon? How about a guitar?

Bacon guitarWe caught wind of this video from rock journalist Gail Worley (a terrific writer who also has her own blog, the Worley Gig), who in turn got it from the guys over at In it, you'll learn how to create your own bacon guitar using the delicious cured meat and a classical or Spanish guitar (though for the latter, shouldn't you be using serrano ham?), and then play a bit o' bacon-loving blues on it.

You might say this gives the term "salt lick" whole new meaning.

Rock Guitarist Ronnie Montrose Dead at Age 64

Posted by Michael Mueller on March 5, 2012 at 3:05 PM

Guitarist Ronnie Montrose, leader of the 1970s rock band that bore his name, died at his home in Millbrae, California, on Saturday, March 3. He was 64.

A statement at his web site,, reads:

"A few months ago, we held a surprise party for Ronnie Montrose's 64th birthday. He gave an impromptu speech, and told us that after a long life, filled with joy and hardship, he didn't take any of our love for granted.

"He passed today. He'd battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. We miss him already, but we're glad to have shared with him while we could."

Our friend and colleague Dave Rubin remembers Ronnie as "a virtuoso blues-rock guitarist with an extraordinary sense of melody, phrasing, and dynamics. His instrumental version of Gene Pitney's 'Town Without Pity' is a tutorial in singing through your guitar."

Montrose first found acclaim when he played on Van Morrison's 1971 album Tupelo Honey. He then played briefly with Boz Scaggs before joining the Edgar Winter Group in 1972, where he played on the band's masterpiece They Only Come Out at Night, which included "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride."

In 1973, Montrose formed his own band, featuring a young Sammy Hagar on vocals. The band released their self-titled debut, Montrose, in 1973, and on the strength of its enduring classic rock anthems like "Bad Motor Scooter," "Rock Candy," "Rock the Nation," and "Space Station No. 5," it is now considered one of the greatest rock debuts of all time.

Montrose is survived by his wife, Leighsa, as well as a son, a daughter, and five grandchildren.

Official Guitar Tab for Bully by Shinedown Now Online

Posted by Michael Mueller on March 2, 2012 at 11:14 AM

It doesn't seem that long ago that I was at a showcase party held by Atlantic Records for a private, acoustic performance by the label's hot new signing, Shinedown. There was quite a bit of skepticism in the room full of music journalists—comments like, "Just what we need, another Creed or Nickelback." But after a couple of tunes from singer Brent Smith and then-guitarist Jasin Todd, eyebrows were raised, heads nodded in approval, and most of us left thinking, "Hey, these guys are pretty good."

Nearly 10 years, several million albums sold, and a couple of lineup changes later, Shinedown is one of the most popular rock bands on the planet. Now, the band's new single "Bully" from their upcoming album, Amaryllis (due 3/26 on Roadrunner Records), has rocketed up the Billboard rock chart to #4. And now you can get the official, note-for-note guitar tab right here at
