ALLMAN BROTHERS Open Summer Tour With Special Guests Tom Petty, Susan Tedeschi, and More (Video)

Posted by Michael Mueller on May 22, 2009 at 12:52 PM

The Allman Brothers Band opened the West Coast leg of their 40th anniversary tour last week with two sold-out shows at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA (5/12 & 5/13), played with the Dead and the Doobie Brothers at a sold-out Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington state (5/16), and followed it up with two star-studded nights (5/19 & 5/20) at Los Angeles's Greek Theatre.

At the Los Angeles shows, ABB welcomed some special guests to the stage, including Tom Petty and bandmates Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell for two Bob Dylan covers, "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" and "Highway 61 Revisited," with Tench also sitting in for "The Sky Is Crying." Longtime group friend Bruce Willis played harmonica on "You Don't Love Me" and "Southbound" (also with Tench). On night two, Susan Tedeschi, wife of ABB guitarist Derek Trucks, played "Little By Little"; Ziggy Marley helped the band with their first-ever version of "I Shot The Sheriff" (see video below); and Conan O'Brien's horn section jazzed up "Same Thing," "Soulshine," "Into The Mystic," "Little By Little," and "I Shot The Sheriff."

Win a ROBIN TROWER Custom Shop Fender Strat!

Posted by Michael Mueller on May 22, 2009 at 11:34 AM

Robin Trower StratRobin Trower fans nationwide will have a chance not only to experience their idol in concert this summer, but also to win a signature model Fender Custom Shop Robin Trower Stratocaster personally set up by Custom Shop Senior Master Builder Todd Krause, who sets up all of Trower's guitars.

Ever since his earliest success with Procol Harum in the 1960s and his subsequent prolific solo career, Trower has been the premier exponent of impeccably phrased U.K. blues psychedelia. His 2009 North American tour ranks among his busiest ever—the first leg kicks off May 26 in Agoura Hills, Calif., and continues through July 11; the second leg commences Sept. 11 in Atlantic City, N.J., and continues through Oct. 24.

At each tour date, the Fender Custom Shop Robin Trower Signature Stratocaster that will eventually go home with one lucky fan will be on display. To win the guitar—which will be autographed by Trower—fans need only sign up at the shows or at their nearest Fender Custom Shop dealer. It's a rare opportunity for a true Robin Trower fan to win not just a finely crafted Custom Shop signature model, but one that has actually been in the talented hands of both Trower and Krause.

Top 10 Must-Know Rock Guitar Riffs!

Posted by Michael Mueller on May 21, 2009 at 3:14 PM

You know a great riff when we hear one—it stays with you, and you've got to learn it as soon as you get your hands on your axe. Below are 10 of the greatest rock guitar riffs of all-time. All of them are considered "must-know" riffs, so if you haven't learned any of them yet, click on the title to get the guitar tab!

10. "Day Tripper" The Beatles
This monumental John Lennon-penned line set the bar for the single-note bass-line style guitar riff that now dominates the hard rock and metal landscape.

9.  "Purple Haze" Jimi Hendrix
There couldn't be a more appropriate introduction to the man who would become known as the greatest guitarist of all time.

8.  "Enter Sandman" Metallica
After pummeling fans into submission with their blistering thrash style in the '80s, Metallica brought metal to the mainstream with their 1991 self-titled release the "Black Album" and its opening track, "Enter Sandman."

7.  "Walk This Way" Aerosmith
Raunchy, bluesy, funky, and loaded with swagger, Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" epitomizes what a great rock song should be.

6.  "Crazy Train" Ozzy Osbourne
Courtesy of guitarist Randy Rhoads, the F# minor main riff of "Crazy Train" offers not only a lesson in pedal point but also a great alternate picking workout!

5.  "Sunshine of Your Love" Cream
In an example of masterly arranging, the main riff is heard variously in both single-note and chordal forms, thus giving the listener something familiar without being too repetitious.

4.  "Iron Man" Black Sabbath
This quintessential metal riff, composed entirely of 6th-string-rooted power chords in the key of B minor, set the precedent for all heavy guitar to come.

3.  "Back in Black" AC/DC
Has the use of space and rests ever been so effective as in AC/DC's "Back in Black"? The Brothers Young got rhythm, and nowhere is that more apparent than in this classic gem!

2.  "Smoke on the Water" Deep Purple
Ritchie Blackmore's masterpiece has probably been played by more guitarists than any other riff in history!

1.  "Johnny B. Goode" Chuck Berry
We often think about how Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen made heads turn with their prodigious gifts and daring souls, but when you combine the musical and social implications of what Chuck Berry accomplished, there can be little doubt that Berry is the king of rock 'n' roll guitar.

Win a Record Deal With MySpace Records!

Posted by Michael Mueller on May 21, 2009 at 11:46 AM

MySpace and Toyota Motor Sales have announced the official launch of Rock the Space, an exclusive competition encouraging unsigned bands or solo artists to submit an original song for the opportunity to score a recording contract with MySpace Records, the company's full-service independent label. The contest begins today (May 21) and runs through July 1, 2009.

To enter the Rock the Space competition, artists must submit an original mp3 demo. All entrants will have the opportunity to create a viral music widget with an easy embed code to help them spread their music across MySpace and the web. MySpace users can share in the experience by adding the music widgets to their profiles and posting comments on the Toyota Music profile.

In July, MySpace Records will select five finalists who will be featured prominently on the Toyota Music profile and the MySpace community will vote to select the winner. The five finalists will receive a media allocation to promote themselves with My Ads targeted advertising throughout MySpace.

The Rock the Space winner will be announced in September and will receive a recording contract as well as a $10,000 musical instrument prize package provided by Fender, the world's leading guitar manufacturer. The winner's song will also be available for download on the MySpace Music Home Page. The four runners-up win a MySpace Records Development Deal friends package.

For more information or to submit and original song for consideration please visit www.myspace.com/toyotamusic.
