JEFF BECK To Release First Studio Album in Seven Years

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 20, 2010 at 9:04 AM

Jeff Beck guitar tabFor his first studio album in seven years, Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck returns with an eclectic mix of tracks that find the guitar virtuoso accompanied by a handpicked cast of talented musicians, as well as several songs accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra. Emotion & Commotion will be released on Atco Records on April 13.

Beck recorded Emotion & Commotion late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album's diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ("Lilac Wine"), Olivia Safe ("Elegy For Dunkirk"), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ("I Put A Spell On You" and "There's No Other Me").

To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini's immortal aria "Nessun Dorma" and "Elegy For Dunkirk" from the film Atonement to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley's interpretation of "Corpus Christi Carol."

Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. "It turned out amazingly well, but I didn't want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of nonclassical music."

Before launching a world tour to support Emotion & Commotion, Beck will unite with Eric Clapton in February for a series of exclusive shows in London, New York City, Toronto, and Montreal. The guitarists—both former members of the Yardbirds—will play separately before taking the stage to perform together.

After the shows with Clapton, Beck will play South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan before returning to America for the U.S. leg of the tour starting mid-April and including an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on May 1.

For Beck, the new album and tour follows in the wake of a triumphant 2009—his most successful year ever. Among the many highlights were a sold-out world tour; his second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the release of the platinum-selling Performing This Week… Live At Ronnie Scott's, which earned a Grammy nomination for "A Day In The Life"; and magnificent performances with his band at the 25th Anniversary Concert of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden.

PRS Guitars Unveils the Floyd Rose Equipped Torero Model

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 15, 2010 at 5:18 PM

PRS ToreroThe SE Torero offers many "firsts" for PRS Guitars, and is dubbed by Paul Reed Smith himself as "a shredder's dream." Features unique to the new SE Torero and first ever for PRS are the use of a Floyd Rose bridge, EMG pickups, and neck-through body construction.

"The Torero has our quality with a Floyd Rose tremolo and EMGs," says Paul Reed Smith. "It's very cool."

The minimal/unpronounced heel smoothly blends into the body. That coupled with the deeper, lower cutaway increases sustain and gives easier and smoother accessibility to the upper frets while pick-ups provide power, clarity and definition. The bound ebony fretboard with jumbo frets and no inlays paired with a mahogany body and flame-maple veneer give this guitar a very distinct look.

"I am excited to bring this new model to market," commented Doug Shive, SE Business Unit Manager. "We incorporated a lot of firsts for PRS in the Torero that should appeal to players who may not have considered PRS in the past."

Detailed specifications for the SE Torero are as follows:

  • mahogany body with flame-maple veneer, arm carve, and bound top
  • 3-piece maple neck with thru-neck construction and a wide-thin carve with a heavily carved heel area
  • 25-1/2" scale length
  • ebony bound fretboard with no inlay, jumbo frets and a bound headstock
  • standard EMG 81 and 85 pickups
  • master volume and tone, 3-way blade switch, and remote battery box
  • chrome hardware
  • original Floyd Rose 1000 Series bridge
  • standard PRS tuners and standard strap buttons.

Wayne Johnson, PRS Amp team member and a 2008 recipient of "The Ten Hottest New Guitarists of the Month" by Guitar Player magazine forum members, describes this new model as "sonically devastating," and PRS's SE Inspector Dong Chang also offered, "This guitar makes you play harder."

New JOE BONAMASSA Led Supergroup Black Country

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 15, 2010 at 1:28 PM

Joe Bonamassa guitar tabJoe Bonamassa, who is finally receiving the recognition he deserves in guitar circles, has reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out an impressive-looking supergroup. Black Country features Bonamassa along with bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater), and their debut record, which is being produced by Kevin Shirley, is due out around April.

Here's the latest diary post at Shirley's web site, CavemanProductions.com:

So there it is folks - the cat is out the bag! This is BLACK COUNTRY.

I am producing the debut album and we already have six tracks cut. We're going to do the next session in March when I'm through with my current project, and I hope to finish in early April. The band is Jason Bonham on drums, Derek Sherinian on keyboards, Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals and Joe Bonamassa on guitar and vocals. The songs are all original and what a lineup! They are all the very best players in the world, for my money!

Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner) is a totally unique drummer and a supreme, yet oh-so-tasty powerhouse. Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper) is super versatile, and is playing mostly overdriven Hammond organ in this ensemble and is the color on the palette. Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze) plays bass and sings with a range VERY, VERY few can even get close to, and Joe Bonamassa, perhaps the best Blues guitarist around, plays hard riffing guitar as well as adding his signature vocals alongside Glenn. You'll just have to wait - we're planning to get this out late summer, and it's promising to be phenomenal! Perhaps if you're around San Bernadino about March 17.........

But there's more...... look out for Joe Bonamassa's new solo album, Black Rock, arriving March 23rd. I am holed up producing an album, and am away from my family for a couple of months, and I'm looking forward to seeing my babies real soon!

TAYLOR GUITARS Announces New 8-String Baritone Guitar

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 14, 2010 at 1:46 PM

Taylor Baritone 8-stringBorn from a love of tone and a passion for innovation, Taylor Guitars has expanded the possibilities of guitar voicing in its new model, the Baritone 8-String. With a bold, fresh sound, the Baritone 8-String  broadens the tonal spectrum, giving players a rich musical palette that promises to uncork new inspiration of musical harmony.

Featuring a Grand Symphony body with a richly hued back and sides of Indian rosewood topped with Sitka spruce, the Baritone 8-String embodies the spirit of a traditional baritone guitar paired with Taylor's quality craftsmanship and product innovation. The model features a longer-scaled 27-inch neck and Taylor-designed baritone bracing. The guitar is tuned from B to B and features additional octave strings paired along with the third and fourth (D and A) strings. This feature gives players an extended range of sounds, without compromising tonal integrity or playability.

The Baritone 8-String came to be as Taylor's product development team was deep in the throes of designing several series of 35th Anniversary guitars, including a 6-string baritone (XXXV-B) and a 9-string guitar (XXXV-9). The team decided to experiment by creating a hybrid of the two, as Bob Taylor explains. "We loved the traditional baritone, but missed having some of that upper register. We thought, what if we turned it into a 9-string baritone? So, we made one. But after deciding it was a little too jangly, we pulled off the [doubled second] string, leaving the third and fourth octave strings. It sounded awesome."

Adding the two octave strings, Taylor says, transformed the baritone. "It's a whole new ballgame. It's really, really cool because you can either accentuate those octaves or stay away from them. The beauty of this guitar is that it goes low and those two strings brighten it up, but they don't sound too 'octave-y'. It doesn't give you that 12-string effect as much as it really just extends the range because, as a baritone, the octaves aren't really high. It fills the guitar out and gives it a nice (tonal) spread."

The Baritone 8-String is tuned a fourth below standard guitar tuning, allowing the player to play songs in a lower register. In terms of the playing experience, Taylor's David Hosler, a member of the product development team, compares the tonal properties of the 8-string baritone to a blend of three different instruments. "When I hear it, I feel like I'm hearing a 6-string, a bass, and a bit of 12-string all in one guitar," he says. "In giving it a good listen, it sounds like standard and alternate tuning at the same time."

The model's appointments include a mother-of-pearl peghead inlay and delicate diamond-shaped fretboard inlays, a three-ring abalone rosette, and abalone-dotted bridge pins. Premium features include Indian rosewood binding, a bone nut and saddle, and an all-gloss finish. Amplified with the Taylor Expression System pickup and strung with Elixir Baritone strings, the model is also offered in a standard 6-string version.

Available at authorized domestic and international Taylor dealers in mid-winter, the Baritone 8-String will be offered at a suggested retail price of $3,998 and the Baritone 6-String at $3,798.
