George Harrison Guitar Collection Comes to the iPad

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 17, 2012 at 3:41 PM

PRESS RELEASE: BANDWDTH Publishing, in conjunction with the George Harrison Estate, announces the release of a special iPad app celebrating the guitarist and his historical guitar collection. The Guitar Collection: George Harrison iPad app will be released through iTunes on February 23, two days before Harrison's birthdate.

The app brings George Harrison's private guitar collection to life through photographs, detailed descriptions, audio, and video footage. For the first time, with the help of unique 360° imaging by photographer Steven Sebring, fans can see the scratches, dings, and worn threads on the guitars as if they were themselves holding the instruments.

The history of each guitar is laid out in great detail; including the origin of the guitar, when and how it became part of Harrison's collection, modifications he made to it and why each was so important in creating his distinctive sound. Songs from his catalogue are organized by the guitars used on each track, which allows the user to appreciate the personalities of each instrument.

The video section of the app contains footage of Ben Harper, Josh Homme, Mike Campbell, and Dhani Harrison each playing and showcasing the guitars and exploring their feel and tone. In addition, Conan O'Brien and Dhani discuss what make these guitars so exceptional.  Also in this section, guitar great Gary Moore shares his views on what made George Harrison such a distinctive and influential guitar player.

The app will sell for $9.99 at the Apple App Store.

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 9, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Tony IommiBlack Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma, a type of cancer that attacks the lymphatic system. According to his publicist, Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan, and he remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.

The news comes as the original members of Black Sabbath—Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward—have been writing and recording their first album together in 33 years, set for release this fall. Van Halen Confirms Title and Release Date of New Album

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 6, 2012 at 9:29 AM

At an invitation-only event at the 250-seat Cafe What? in New York City last night (1/5), Van Halen ripped through an 11-song set comprised of hits and a new song called "She's the Woman" (see live clip below) and confirmed that their new album, titled A Different Kind of Truth, will be released on February 7. The first single, "Tattoo," (see below) will debut on January 10. You can check out fan footage of the band performing "Panama" below.

"She's the Woman" is actually a song the band wrote for a demo way back in 1976, so you can't technically call it "new," per se, but it should be rockin' nonetheless. Check out audio of that 1976 demo below, in which you can hear a very familiar guitar part starting at the 1:23 mark ("Mean Street," anyone?)

Metallica to Release EP Beyond Magnetic on CD Jan 31

Posted by Michael Mueller on January 4, 2012 at 1:22 PM

Metallica guitar tabJanuary 4, 2012 - Los Angeles, CA - Metallica has announced that is "has decided to go old school" and will release its current digital EP, Beyond Magnetic, on CD worldwide at retail on January 30th and on January 31st in North America. The EP, released via all digital retailers on December 13th, features four tracks recorded during the sessions for 2008's Death Magnetic.

Said the members of Metallica of Beyond Magnetic: "During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you've all come to know over the last three years. Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on 'Mission Metallica' (remember 'Mission Metallica'?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, 'What ever happened to those other four songs?' We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them for our 30th anniversary celebration last month, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March '08. These four songs were released as gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they're being made available to you."
