March 20, 2012 - (Burbank, CA) - Neil Young & Crazy Horse will release a very special album titled Americana on June 5, 2012. Americana is the first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. Crazy Horse is: Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, Poncho Sampedro, and Neil Young.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse AmericanaAs you'll see from the track-listing, Americana is collection of classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have been referred to as "protest songs," "murder ballads," or campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for everyman.

Some of these compositions which, like "Tom Dooley" and "Oh Susannah," were written in the 1800s, while others, like "This Land Is Your Land" (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted "deleted verses") and "Get A Job," are mid-20th-century folk classics. It's also interesting to note that "God Save The Queen," Britain's national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until we came to adopt our very own "The Star Spangled Banner," which has been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official national anthem in 1931. Each of these compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American heritage; the roots of what we think of as "Americana" in cultural terms, using songs as a way of passing along information and documenting our past.

What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist, the emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what's going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written.

Neil has penned brief historical details about each of the songs on Americana that can be found here.

Americana was produced by Neil and John Hanlon along with Mark Humphreys, and engineered by John Hanlon with John Hausmann and Jeff Pinn. It was recorded at Audio Casa Blanca by John Hanlon.

The Beatles Yellow Submarine Film Restored For May Release

Posted by Michael Mueller on March 20, 2012 at 9:24 AM

London – March 20, 2012 – The Beatles' classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release on May 28 (May 29 in North America). The film's songtrack album will be reissued on CD on the same date.

Beatles Yellow SubmarineCurrently out of print, the film has been restored in 4K digital resolution for the first time by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film’s restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Bonus features for the Yellow Submarine DVD and Blu-ray include a short making-of documentary titled "Mod Odyssey," the film's original theatrical trailer, audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, several brief interview clips with others involved with the film, storyboard sequences, 29 original pencil drawings and 30 behind-the-scenes photos. Both Digipak packages will include reproductions of animation cels from the film, collectible stickers, and a 16-page booklet with a new essay by Yellow Submarine aficionado John Lasseter (Disney, Pixar Animation Studios).

Yellow Submarine, based upon a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including "Eleanor Rigby," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "All You Need Is Love," and "It's All Too Much." When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement, revolutionizing a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques.

On April 24, Candlewick Press will release a new, compact hardcover edition of the Yellow Submarine picture book, a read-aloud journey for the whole family. Featuring the lighthearted wit of the film's script alongside original artwork from the movie that has charmed children and adults through several generations, the beautiful, 40-page book will be sold by retailers everywhere and on the Beatles Store. An interactive digital version of the book is also available as a free download on Apple's iBookstore for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch at iTunes.

Yellow Submarine synopsis:
Once upon a time… or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland, a place where happiness and music reigned supreme. But all that was threatened when the terrible Blue Meanies declared war and sent in their army led by a menacing Flying Glove to destroy all that was good. Enter John, Paul, George and Ringo to save the day! Armed with little more than their humor, songs, and of course, their yellow submarine, The Beatles tackle the rough seas ahead in an effort to bring down the evil forces of bluedom.

Three questions: 1) Are you an Eddie Van Halen fan? 2) Would you like to own a piece of Van Halen history? 3) Got a couple hundred thousand dollars burning a hole in your pocket? If you answered "yes" to all three (or if you like to live vicariously through investment bankers), keep reading.

In a post at the Rig Talk forum, Brad King of King Guitar Ltd. has listed an original 1982 EVH Frankenstrat that belonged to and was played on tour by Eddie Van Halen during the Diver Down era and was used quite a bit in the studio on the band's 1984 album.

"My shop, King Guitar Ltd., has been asked to help broker a very important guitar from a private collection. It is not for the faint of pocket book, but if you have the dough, there are not many cooler collectible guitars out there," King wrote.

The guitar is featured in this year's release of The Guitar Collection Book, which contains 150 of the world's most famous and priceless instruments.

New Home Recording Software Guides From Hal Leonard

Posted by Michael Mueller on March 14, 2012 at 6:12 PM

Although home recording has been fairly prevalent for about 15 years now, it's never been as easy and professional-sounding as it is today. Still, even with the plug 'n' play tools, loops, and other technology-made-simple options available, there are myriad potential pitfalls and "insider" techniques you need to know about. The good folks at Hal Leonard have just made the road from musical idea to finished recording a lot simpler with three new releases.

Mixing and Mastering with Pro Tools is part of Hal Leonard's Quick Pro Guides series and the perfect companion guide to help you get the most from your Pro Tools recording software. Written by award-winning producer/engineer, musician, and composer Glenn Lorbecki, this focused guide shows you step-by-step how to achieve your best mixes, putting the the best of Pro Tools at your fingertips with plenty of sessions, audio examples, and video assistance.

Sound Design, Mixing & Mastering with Ableton Live is another new entry to the Quick Pro Guide series. Written by author, mastering engineer, and certified Ableton trainer Jake Perrine, this companion guide will inspire you to use Live in new ways, from inspiring recipes for sculpting audio magic and mayhem to in-depth discussions of mixing and mastering that you would expect to learn in an audio production school.

Finally, Recording Software & Plug-Ins is the updated, second-edition of Book 3 in The Hal Leonard Recording Method. Regardless of which software you use—Logic, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Cubase, SONAR, Reason, or Studio One—they all share common concepts and features, and this new volume teaches you what you need to know to be able to navigate any of them. Acclaimed author Bill Gibson offers a concise and thorough explanation of the digital recording process along with techniques to combine exciting new technologies with classic analog systems and tools.

Custom Guitars Made from the "Bones of New York"

Posted by Michael Mueller on March 8, 2012 at 6:11 PM

As the "green movement" has grown over the past decade, it has become rather fashionable (and responsible, I might add) to craft furniture and various home fixtures from reclaimed wood. And now a New York City guitar builder has gotten into the act.

Working out of Carmine Street Guitars, luthier Rich Kelly, 62, builds custom guitars from what he calls the "bones of New York," using reclaimed wood—floor joints, rafters, and the like—from historic NYC buildings like Chumley's Pub, the Hotel Chelsea, and the Lincoln Hotel. If you're wondering whether Kelly's guitars are closer to art than they are practical, usable instruments, consider his client list includes Lou Reed, G.E. Smith, Bill Frisell, and Walter Becker, among others.

Surprisingly, it won't take a second mortgage to own one of Kelly's guitars. Whereas most vintage and custom-built guitars go for $10,000 and up, his currently run just under $2,000, even though he builds only three or four guitars per month. As a result, the waiting list is just over a year long.
