Shred For Your Life Guitar Battle To Be Held April 17

The 6th annual "Shred For Your Life" Guitar Battle will be held on April 17th, at Webster Hall, in New York City. Brainchild of musician/artist Marc Razo (not to be confused with shredder extraordinaire Marc Rizzo), Shred For Your Life features guitarists from age 13 to 54 in a headcutter's duel, judged this year by singer Andrew W.K., drummer Jaleel Bunton (TV on the Radio), and actor/writer Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2). If you're wondering why there are no guitarists among the judges, well, you're not alone. But this is a "shred" contest in name alone. You don't have to be the genetic clone of Steve Vai to do well—but judging by the videos below, you do have to have fun. And hey, as the song goes: "If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere."

The winner will receive a 3-foot tall guitar pick trophy and a guitar crown (you'd think they'd find a guitar sponsor to give away a cool new axe). Past winners include Chris Maxwell (Skeleton Key/Elegant Too), Alex Nemiz (Mod Rocket - first female winner and first teenager to win), and Blake Mills who won in 2007 has worked with Band of Horses, Jakob Dylan, Julian Casablancas, and Cass McCombs.
