New Exhibit Explores Jimi Hendrix's London Years
In 1966, guitarist Jimi Hendrix went to London and took up residence with his English girlfriend Kathy Etchingham in an apartment next to the home of 18th-century composer George Frideric Handel. Now, that old Mayfair-neighborhood apartment is part of the Handel House Museum, which is hosting an exhibition on the famous guitarist's London years, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his death on September 18, 1970.
The exhibit, which runs from August 25 through November 7, will include the Gibson Flying V that Hendrix played at the Isle of Wight festival, film clips, articles of the guitarist's clothing, handwritten lyrics, and even a copy of his death certificate.

Acoustic Guitar Masters Tour to Feature Eric Johnson, Andy McKee, Peppino D'Agostino
Three of the most popular, talented, innovative and musically rich guitar players and composers in contemporary music will bring their acoustic guitars together on stages across America this October and in January 2011 when Eric Johnson, Andy McKee and Peppino D’Agostino meet on the Guitar Masters tour. The 21-date two-leg run of theaters, colleges and clubs will feature individual sets by each capped with a finale featuring all three players together.
The trek is sure to be an unforgettable musical experience for concertgoers that unites guitar virtuosos not just known for their awesome skills and technique but a mutual gift for song composition and melody and drawing out the full musicality of the solo acoustic guitar to near-orchestral dimensions. Creative sparks, one-time only stunning improvisations and mutual inspiration are sure to abound as they come together at the end of every show to offer a value-added concert bill that appeals to fans of many musical styles as well as guitar aficionados.
The tour will be the first time that McKee has met Johnson, whose hit "Cliffs of Dover" inspired him to play guitar. "He's really musical," McKee observes. "It's like hearing a song but rather than having a vocalist he covers the melody and all the bases at once with his guitar. I still listen to his music all the time and even make references to it in my playing."
D'Agostino has opened shows for Johnson and notes, "When he plays he really puts his special knowledge in it." He is also an admirer of McKee's talent. "What he does with techniques like tapping and his compositions is fabulous. He's an amazing player."
"Andy is a great player who puts it all these guitar technique into songs he writes and plays that make them quite interesting. But it's still all about the song," Johnson observes of McKee. "Peppino is a really emotional and very soulful player. And he comes from a little bit different background than Andy and I do, so it's really nice combination for all of us to come from our different sources and mix it all together."
The tour will coincide with the release of Johnson's new album, Up Close, on his own Vortexan label via EMI. McKee issued his latest recording, the CD/DVD package Joyland, on Razor & Tie Records in March. And D'Agostino's latest album, Nine White Kites, comes out on his own label August 24.

De Lucia, McLaughlin, and Di Meola on Mediterranean Sundance
Call it Flashback Friday, one day early. While checking out a video from a press release, I happened upon this old video footage of Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin (in more congenial times) performing Di Meola's enchanting composition "Mediterranean Sundance." As was usual when the Trio toured together, all three were on fire.
I actually had the good fortune to see them live, in 1991, and it easily ranks as the most incredible display of guitar virtuosity I've ever witnessed—and I've seen a ton.
Anyhow, enjoy the video ... I'll be out tossing my nylon-string in the trash.

Slayer Announces the Vinyl Conflict Box Set
LOS ANGELES, CA (Monday, August 16, 2010) -- For the first time in its near 30-year history, Slayer, the single most distinctive and radical thrash metal band ever, will see its ten American Recordings albums released as a limited-edition, high-end box set - The Vinyl Conflict (American Recordings/Sony Legacy). Ten albums on 11 discs, The Vinyl Conflict will feature the band's entire Def/American Recordings catalogue: Reign in Blood (1986), South of Heaven (1988), Seasons In The Abyss (1990), the double-record Live Decade of Aggression (1991), Divine Intervention (1994), Undisputed Attitude (1998), God Hates Us All (2001), Christ Illusion (2006), and World Painted Blood (2009). The Vinyl Conflict will be released on October 12, 2010; check Slayer's web site or Amazon.com for pricing.
"Most longtime Slayer fans may not have these records at this point," said American Recordings' Dino Paredes, "or their copies are completely beat-up, so to have the complete catalogue in this first-class presentation is terrific. For the newer fans, this is their opportunity to really get into this band the way that they could have if they were born 20 years earlier."
American/Sony Legacy invested a great amount of care into making The Vinyl Conflict, treating the albums the way they would treat a great jazz, classical, Bob Dylan or Miles Davis record, something that isn't normally done for metal records. All ten albums have been re-mastered from the original analog flat master tapes and were pressed on the highest quality, 180-gram audiophile vinyl at RTI, the most respected pressing plant in the U.S. and among the best in the world. Lacquers were cut and re-cut several times to ensure the highest sound quality. The individual vinyl discs will come in a standard, clear inner sleeve to preserve the vinyl, are then housed in high-quality litho-wrapped jackets, and then boxed in a hardcover slipcase. Additionally, reproductions of the original LP inner sleeve artwork were converted to 12X12 inserts.
"The vinyl box is a real treat for fans, especially with today's renewed and increased interest in vinyl," added Sony Legacy's Adam Farber. "It's been years and years since the Slayer vinyl has been in print - only the two most recent albums are currently available on vinyl, the rest have been out of print for years and very hard to find. These albums sound spectacular - they sound like you've never heard them before."
"Everything about The Vinyl Conflict - the look of it, the feel of it - it's very strong, very powerful, very Slayer," added Paredes, "from the music to the dripping, bloody pentagram on the front of the box. It's perfect."
Currently, Slayer is co-headlining the first leg of the American Carnage Tour with Megadeth that kicked off August 11 and goes through September 4. In addition, the band's three classic in-concert DVDs - Live Intrusion, War at the Warfield, and Still Reigning, will be released August 17, separately and as a limited-edition, 3-pak box set.
JASON BONHAM's Led Zeppelin Experience Launches on October 8
Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, which Bonham created to celebrate the life and music of his father, the legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, launches on October 8, in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. The limited engagement will continue through November, visiting 29 confirmed North American cities along the way, with more to be announced.
Bonham has teamed with Annerin Productions, the company behind "The Pink Floyd Experience" and "Rain, A Tribute to the Beatles," to put on this tribute. The show will be accompanied by a state-of-the-art audio-visual display, including giant video screens showing futuristic art and historical video footage and photos of Led Zeppelin.
"I can't wait," Jason enthuses. "I'm sure it will be an emotional night, especially the first time we do it in front of an audience, but it's a commemoration of Dad's life and my life with the music and the company of Led Zeppelin. And I'm really looking forward to doing it."
Bonham still has not announced the LZE band lineup, for fear of having the show pre-judged by fans and critics (whatever). Bonham says it will be an opening night surprise.
Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets.
